About Voodoo Kings

How It All Began – Irena and the Zodiacs

The winter chill had not yet blown out of Coventry, especially in the hearts of Sam and Whippet. For the two musicians, hardly enough time had passed for them to get over the shock and pain of loosing their friend and fellow band member Gus Chambers. On a frosty morning musicians and music lovers from Coventry and beyond gathered to pay their last respects and Gus was laid to rest. An emptiness was felt not only in the hearts of those close to Gus but also on the Coventry music scene known for its originality and energy.

By chance Dave was approached by Irena and was asked to play at the Zodiacs 50th Anniversary and it was here the Voodoo spirit had begun to work it’s magic!

David West on vocals and the Gretch guitar, Sam Smith on Double Bass and Terry Downes on drums driven by fate and desire came together to rehearse. An excitement was buzzing in the air and word soon caught on that Dave and Sam had been reunited by music. Interest was brewing as the trio worked on original lyrics and beats and two weeks later they performed four of their own songs and rocked the Zodiacs audience with their Voodoo vibe.

The following night the lads performed their first ever gig together as the VOODOO KINGS!

The band is still in its early stages but with Whippet’s agility and desire for original beats, Dave’s writing skills and Sam’s ability to arrange a melody an original voodoo rock n roll sound is rising up from the swamps. Audiences are growing in number, interest around the world is starting to bubble…….what’s in store for this innovative trio?

Systems Green

“They say it’s just a time machine, but they believe it can do more, much more. Rule the hearts of man it can and their ancients believe it to be a record….” Sam whispered “not like any record I’ve seen, it’s a disc alright but it’s too small and too silver, I don’t think these ‘ancients’ ever played vinyl” added Whippet before Dave alerted them to an imminent danger “ We’ve sneaked a peak, now lets get out before it blows!”

Blown from the future into the past and back into beyond where they called home the three humans had become known as ‘Voodoo Kings’. ‘Kings’ related to a rhythm they made into a hypnotising sound wave and ‘Voodoo’ was a dancing spirit that weaved a vibe through the rhythm and entered the human soul and made the coldest heart feel the warmth of a solar flare.

One day on Earth there was a sonic boom and the Voodoo Kings found themselves a dimension away while all humans heard the boom and felt the earth beneath them move. While the Voodoo Kings assessed their new surroundings in space the atmosphere on Earth became static and a silence deafened the green to its living roots.

“Its green plasma” Dave looked at the shell of their travelling hull of a cell, “I think it’s more ethereal” Sam mused, “ whaddya reckon Whip?”… “It’s not as good as ‘The Dive’ is it… I wonder what ‘Systems Green’ means?” A floating hologram of a box projecting images from black and white film to ‘Avatar’ and sounds from the World’s radio stations from all eras exploded into life. The box marked ‘Systems green’ stayed in the un-blinking stare of Whippet’s eyes, he lowered the brim of his cap to avert the glare.

Through the fog a knowledge of the green became apparent to the Voodoo Kings and Sam quickly stood up, “They say it’s just a time machine……” he mused “….and it’s about to explode!” The switch was on the box marked ‘Systems Green’….It had to be now or never…Whippet hit the switch.  The resuting sensation was like nothing on Earth, but was this Earth?

A green twilight marked the dawn of the arrival in time from space. The Voodoo Kings had a vibe to share with their fellow inhabitants of this planet…..and a small silver disc they stole.
